Every month here at Magmaweb.com we are asked to recommend magazine subscriptions which would make good gifts for their children, husband, wife or other loved one. Well we finally have gotten around to posting this helpful information online and here are our first round of recommendations. Below are listed a few of our more popular categories of avid magazine reader and every month we will cover more reader types as we pick out our favorite magazine subscription recommendations.
Magazine Gift Ideas for Children
Boy's Life Magazine Subscription
Our Review: There is a great variety of material for boys (and girls) in this magazine whether you're a boy scout or not. There are games, puzzles, lots of science updates and experiments for you to check out on your own, camping info, gear info, fictional and true stories on the lives and experiences of young boys. The magazine is a quick read for older boys and younger ones will want you to skip and hop through the 'good' parts (jokes first.)
Magazine Gift Ideas for the Outdoorsman
Our Review: This magazine will help you to get a rush when dreaming about what you can do on your next trip outdoors. There's great stories about adventure in faraway places that I may never get to see as well as completely different stories on the latest outdoor tech gadgets, clothing and other outdoor technology. These reviews cover such items as bikes, GPS gadgets, clothing, shoes and backpacking gear. The magazine is also fairly liberal in that its pretty highly supportive of the entire environmental movement (as well it should be!) and covers reviews on good enviro websites, films, books and other media. Its a great aspirational magazine to get you doing outside.
Magazine Gift Ideas for the Cook
Cooking Light Magazine Subscription
Our Review: Cooking Light Magazine is a great blend of low-calorie, great-tasting recipes, wine reviews and restaurant visits around the United States. We like Cooking Light Magazine because it has put together some good complete weekly menus as well as its focus on minimizing fat and keeping the meals healthy and "light" but quite tasty. I have personally found many of its meals to be among the best I have tried straight out of a book and its recipes provide inspiration for any category of cooking. There is also a focus on food-related events and on encouraging readers to submit their favorite recipes. The meal pictures are excellent and just get my mouth watering looking at them!
The Entertainment & Tech Geek
Our Review: Now, we would not define this as a tech geek's magazine. If you want that, go with PC Magazine, which is about as tech-geeky as you can get. The best thing about Wired is that it has stayed true to its roots over all of these years. Wired has always had a forward-looking, sophisticated attitude toward technology. You can tell that every article is well-researched and no feature in the magazine is an afterthought. The articles in Wired are quite wide-ranging and can cover such topics as the latest Transformers Movie and the whole history of Transformers to reviews on the latest digital cameras and other cool gadgets. I like that they go to the extreme in some of their reviews and look for more extreme gadgets that one may never have heard about. Sometimes flipping through Wired is like flipping through a Web 2.0 website but, hey, who doesn't like Web 2.0 these days??
The Travel Guru
Travel + Leisure Magazine Subscription
Our Review: Okay, so this magazine tends to lend itself to the affluent traveler, but sometimes I like to travel in high style so this magazine lets me dream about how to do it. We enjoy the photos and articles about 'exotic' vacations in Europe, Asia, the Southern Hemisphere (New Zealand] and Central or South America ... one can dream ... and possibly one day live the dream. We have gotten to learn of vacations in out-of-the-way unique locales. For instance, there was a recent feature article about "Puglia' dubbed "the next Tuscany". There one can rent space in a 15th century convent or room at the most modern resort. In either case, one can taste the finest Italian cuisine, fresh food, grown and raised in the region. Lets Travel!
The Sophisticated Woman
Our Review: We like to compare this magazine to Cosmo because it has had a few of its editors who used to be at Cosmo. That being said, we have found that Glamour is thankfully not as focused on articles about celebrities and sex but rather intermingles only a couple of these articles with other features such as book reviews and other more sophisticated content. Its a bit more on the classy side for most of the women's-focused magazines and includes articles about careers and relationships, but does not go as extreme as Cosmo in promoting such as sexual slant to its articles which we have found to be a bit more on the classy side! Its a good blend of both the pictures and the medium-length articles we "commonpeople" (aka non-celebrity-obsessed) crave.
We will be posting more shortly so get ready to make your list for Christmas 2007!
